As Seen / Heard on:

The New Inn, located on Amesbury High Street, is a Grade II listed building with a rich history dating back centuries. Its architecture and story reflect the town’s development from the early 17th century through to modern times.

Early Origins

The earliest record of an inn by the name The New Inn dates back to 1639, when Agnes Matravers, the widow of Henry Matravers, was recorded as the owner. Henry had purchased the property in 1621. Agnes was listed as a Tippler (alehouse keeper), and her descendants carried on running the inn.

The Present Building

The current New Inn dates mainly from the mid-to-late 17th century, with later Georgian and Victorian alterations. Built of brick with a tiled roof, it retains much of its original charm, including:

• A classic three-bay frontage with sash windows

• A traditional inn layout, with bar, lounge, and cellar

• Surviving 18th- and 19th-century architectural details

Changing Times

Over the centuries, the inn has passed through the hands of many landlords, each adding their own chapter to its history. By 1841, George Furnish was recorded as the landlord, with the property appearing in the Amesbury records as standing on the south side of the HighStreet.

A Living Landmark

Throughout its life, the New Inn has seen innkeepers, brewers, soldiers, and travelers pass through its doors. It has witnessed Amesbury’s transformation — from a market town serving drovers and pilgrims, to a garrison town connected to nearby military history, and finally into the welcoming community it is today.

Innkeepers Through the Years

Some of the known innkeepers include:

• 1620: Agnes Matravers

• 1726: William Stallard
